Synopsis

Set in France at the beginning of the Second World War, the film chronicles the commendable work of Helena Studler, a Daughter of Charity who saved the lives of thousands of French refugees by saving them from imprisonment by Nazi forces (including, among others, François Mitterrand and General Giraud). Helena, witness of horror and barbarism, carries out extraordinary charity work with captives and prisoners of war, while putting her life and that of her close associates in danger to save those of the children, the elderly, prisoners and orphans; all of them victims of the war. The project was launched on the occasion of the commemoration of the 400th anniversary of the founding of the Vincentian family, by St. Vincent de Paul in 1617. Throughout these 400 years, hundreds of persons have given their lives for those who have the least, for the rejected, the unjustly persecuted. Among all those lives, that of Sister Helena Studler stands out– she was a heroine who rescued more than 2000 people from the Nazi concentration camps located in the north of France. Sr. Helena’s life becomes a benchmark for overcoming obstacles, heroism, and the fight against injustice.
